Without Quark Expeditions, The Last Ocean Project would have never happened at all. Quark supported John Weller for three trips to the Antarctic, and Peter Young for one trip as well. They access areas that even the NSF does not. This incredible support has been essential. Quark is at the very heart of The Last Ocean Project.
Since 1991, Quark Expeditions has specialized in polar expeditions aboard vessels purpose-built for high latitude sailing. As the leader in polar expeditions they offer unparalleled technical expertise, leadership and passion for polar adventure.
They have the largest and most diverse fleet of passenger vessels in the Antarctic, allowing them to offer more departures and a greater variety of itineraries than any other company. Within that fleet is the only helicopter - equipped, polar-class icebreaker outfitted for expeditions in Antarctic waters - Kapitan Khlebnikov.
In the Arctic, they go higher and farther than anyone else. Nuclear-powered icebreakers crush their way to the North Pole. The Kapitan Khlebnikov also journeys at latitudes well above the Arctic Circle. In 2008, they added Adventure Ships to their Arctic fleet.
Their teams have decades of experience in the Polar Regions. They understand ice conditions and the impact of weather on ships and helicopters. They are experts in polar history, marine biology and glaciology. They drive Zodiacs for ocean-level cruising. The Captains and their officers and crews are skilled at navigating through pack ice under extreme conditions. Their Hospitality Team can prepare meals and pour beverages during gale force winds. You will not find a more capable team.
From its launch in 1991, the people who are Quark Expeditions have combined the spirit of adventure with a deep sense of environmental responsibility and a strong desire to educate others about the wonders of the Polar Regions. They make the Arctic and Antarctic accessible to people who previously could only dream of setting foot there.
All of John Weller’s photographs were taken with Canon cameras and lenses. Canon Professional Services loaned Weller critical equipment for extended periods to make the photography possible.
Epson provided Weller with critical equipment for storing the vast numbers of digital images produced in the field. Without the Epson equipment, many photographic opportunities would have gone unrealized.
