John Weller was recently awarded a 2009 Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation. This prestigious fellowship will support Weller in the creation of an online library of multi-media narratives that will bring to life both the Ross Sea ecosystem and the most relevant marine research – the scientific foundations of marine ecology – making the information accessible and engaging. The narratives will be published as part of The Last Ocean website and elsewhere. Marine scientists will guide development of each narrative – when possible, the original researcher. Conservation of our dwindling ocean resources will require societal-wide change, and must be driven by pervasive public understanding. Traditional science communication strategies have fallen short of capturing popular interest. Weller’s project, Ocean Channels, will bridge the critical gap between science and the public. Further, Weller will implement a strategic marketing plan to broadcast the information, build a team to continue library development, and collaborate with established centers for science education, helping to expand the Last Ocean community.
